Don't take your eyes off the Gulf

From the point of view of the global economy, the fight for democracy could become a nightmare scenario. Were both Libya and Oman to go totally out of the market, the global economy would lose 2.5 million barrels of oil a day, 3% of what it consumes. There's no evidence Saudi Arabia could compensate for it without pushing their equipment and infrastructure to the limit. Translation; oil may go beyond $150 a barrel in a matter of days. And this without even factoring possible March protests in Saudi Arabia....

The great 2011 Arab revolt is, to quote Bob Dylan, "driving 90 miles an hour in a dead-end street" in Bahrain; is about to make a pit-stop in Saudi Arabia; and it has already hit Oman. The septuagenarian sultan has diabetes, no heirs to his throne, and is now officially puzzled by unemployed youth and angry workers right at this doorstep. Beware of humanitarian imperialism possibly rearing its ugly head in Libya. But all eyes should focus on the Strait of Hormuz; on the Omani, not the Iranian, shore.

What happened to the valiant freedom fighetrs? What happened to Obama's greatest moment; but refusing to support Mubarak Obama gave support to the pro-democtacy movement in the Middle east?

This is a dnagerous thing, one that we should have seen coming and one that we allowed to happen without even a whimper. Today we are screwed, especially with Obama refusing to allow oil to be farmed off of our coasts. We have no domestic oil production, no domestic oil refinaries and no domestic President willing to put America first.

Guys, I am not anti-Obama, I have said many times that my success and failure are tied to his success and failure. I guess I bet on the wrong pony in this race. It is nice to have oral standards, and it is really nice to practice what you preach, but as an American President, your responsibility os to provide America with unquestioned support and work as hard as humanly possible putting America in the best position to succeed.

Barack must of missed that class in the President 101 class. In fact, he probably dropped that class in favor of touring the world and telling them how bad America has been and how sorry he was for the past.

It is all about me, nothing else matters. Obama is not working in my best interests, and I honestly do not believe he is working in your best interests either. It doesn't take a genius to screw up the Middle East the way he has, and he was portrayed as a genius. Remember, the adults were going to take over? Who wouldn't want GW back in office? At least we would have a chance of being represented, not resented, by our own President.

man, not only do you not pay attention to what you post, after all the posts i have made here stating the same thing, you don't pay attention there either. let me refresh your memory tim. i don't believe that any of them are working for my interest whatsoever. i do not suffer under the delusion that this system has my interest, your interest etc., and so forth, in mind. what either side of the ideological aisle does in an effort to cater to anyone's interest is window dressing.

Well, nothing that is coming out of the United States is working in my best interests, so I should oppose whatever is coming out of the United States.

Thank you, MaR, for encouraging me in my opposition to everything that the United States is doing.

I note that my position is that of most of the people in the world.

Isn't self-interest a wonderful thing? · · · wink

Just because there don't seem to be any refineries or oil wells in Boston, doesn't mean there aren't any in the United States. Houston, TX, parts of New Jersey, Bakersfield, CA, Kapolei, Hawaii, and many many more. All the people drilling holes in the Dakotas and in the Gulf of Mexico are proud of producing millions of barrels of oil.

Tim, they're going to operate their GODDAM OIL WELLS properly and safely, or they're not gonna operate them at all, okay?
It's just that simple, the goddam oil companies DO NOT get to say "to hell with pollution, we don't care how many people we kill or put out of work".

They're gonna do it right or forget it.
Your people are trying to lay this on Obama once again, what a surprise.
You guys keep saying he's weak and ineffectual. Well guess what, he's standing firm on this and the oil companies are whining and crying like big fat babies because they have to prove that the short term desire for quick oil isn't going to leave the entire ecosystem of the USA in dire straits.

After all, if our agri-system goes belly up, fifteen hundred animal species start going extinct and thirty percent of the population starts coming down with giant tumors, what does it matter if we suddenly have a lot of oil?

Oh right, I forgot...we don't actually MATTER!
It's so they can sell to the CHINESE!

So quit whining and if you're gonna blame someone (the cheap cop out instead of personal responsibility, like owning an efficient car) then blame Big Oil for putting off safety for half a century.

GODDAMIT.

Well said! ThumbsUp
It's a shame more Americans are unable to see that the problem is not with one party or the other, but with the entire system.

And on a point on the oil companies: lets give those oil companies several more billion in tax breaks! 7 or 8 billion already is not enough, when Exxon earned something like $29 billion in profits the last quarter of 2010. Lets see that they earn double that this quarter! It amazes, and sickens me!

No need to even look at the Gulf. I already know that those oil company profits will be up again, the actions in the Gulf give them an excellent excuse!
