![[Linked Image from primetimemeats.org]](http://primetimemeats.org/assets/images/products/KobeBeefRibeye.jpg) Kobe Ribeye! It has never been "safe" to eat. But I imagine it's truly to die for!I wonder why there hasn't been a mass exodus from Japan. If that meltdown was in my back yard I'd be outa there. Perhaps those who can afford it are quietly moving to to safer areas.

' Ah, properly marbled meat ! When I was young, that was the only meat we would ever buy. Ever since the recent mania for lean meat, it has been hard to get---but I don't eat much meat anymore anyway, so it's no skin off my teeth---or some such cliché. If that meltdown was in my back yard I'd be outa there. Perhaps those who can afford it are quietly moving to to safer areas. And those who can't afford it, aren't.

And those who can't afford it, aren't. Hey..it's always sucked to be poor. But isn't it amazing that no matter how the odds seem to be stacked against them their numbers never seem to dwindle. I don't eat meat any more either. I don't eat it any less though.

Hi All. Our "Baby" recently graduated from U.G.A and we will be "putting her on a plane to..." Ishikawa,Japan on Aug.23. She will be an Assistant Language Teacher via the JET Program . I keep "telling myself"..."There is no safe place on Earth."

Congratulations upon your daughter's graduation, mama! Maybe she'll learn some Japanese food cooking techniques while there that you'll share.

' ' ![[Linked Image from upload.wikimedia.org]](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/8a/Map_of_Japan_with_highlight_on_17_Ishikawa_prefecture.svg/250px-Map_of_Japan_with_highlight_on_17_Ishikawa_prefecture.svg.png) Ishikawa prefecture is noted for its beauty. During the Second World War it was beyond the range of American aerial bombardment and so escaped being flattened as most of the rest of Japan was. It is not as far from Fukushima (about 500 kilometres) as I would like to be, but it is protected by many ranges of mountains, and the monsoon winds blow from the north-west and the south-east, which is good. The local seafood should be safe to eat for at least a few years. Your daughter will not find many Westerners in the area, so it is excellent for learning Japanese. She should not expect being invited to people's homes; it is not the custom. People usually entertain outside their homes. She can expect to be invited informally to young people's apartments for gatherings. If she wants to learn Japanese, she should avoid people who want to learn English. Tell her to find a cheap local restaurant, snack wagon or coffee shop and get to know the people there---a cheap and convenient way to learn a language in any country. If she likes children and has an opportunity to be around them, they also can be very good language instructors.

Thanks Joe! If she learns to cook "period",I'll be impressed! She can make rice balls and "of course" in Japan she will have real "Ramen". Maybe "music lessons" for "cooking lessons"?

Thank you,Numan, for "tamping down" my "trepidation". Allison was an alternate "chosen" in June...we then "bounced on pins and needles" for nearly three weeks before learning exactly where she would be "placed"...and are breathing much more easily now that we know. She is not a "total stranger" to Japan as she spent 6 weeks there last summer. Several years ago she "befriended" a number of musicians from Japan while traveling with the American Wind Symphony . She reads, writes[better than she], speaks basics. She is so looking forward to going...me?... "Praise Be" to Skype!

' [b]Fatal Radiation Level Found at Japanese Plant[/b]The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant said Monday that it measured the highest radiation levels within the plant since it was crippled by a devastating earthquake. The operator, Tokyo Electric Power, said that workers on Monday afternoon had found an area near Reactors No. 1 and 2, where radiation levels exceeded their measuring device’s maximum reading of 10 sieverts per hour — a fatal dose for humans. The plant has continued to spew radiation since the disaster....
The operator is working to install a new makeshift cooling system by early next year that will allow it to finally shut down the plant’s three damaged reactors. Shut it down by early next year, eh? I see the nuclear industry is responding with its accustomed rapidity to the disasters it has caused.
