FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Northern California teacher says he doesn't want to hear a common courtesy in his classroom. He's even lowering students' grades if they say "bless you" after someone sneezes. Steve Cuckovich says the practice is disrespectful and disruptive. He's banned saying "bless you" in his high school health class in Vacaville. Yours, Issodhos

Sounds silly but 24 bless yous and 3 minutes of giggling after each sneeze might get disruptive. Does gesundheit get you a demerit too? Or just religious one?

My only comment is that for many people it is almost as reflexive as the sneeze.
A well reasoned argument is like a diamond: impervious to corruption and crystal clear - and infinitely rarer.
Here, as elsewhere, people are outraged at what feels like a rigged game -- an economy that won't respond, a democracy that won't listen, and a financial sector that holds all the cards. - Robert Reich

My close circle of friends long ago instituted an alternative knee-jerk response to sneezes on the the theory that too much mindless "niceness" can unbalance the cosmic order of things.
Should you sneeze in any of our presences, you will be admonished with a curt, "Screw you!"
The effects have been somewhat murky to evaluate, but anecdote and experience indicate that the Universe has maintained a certain balance, though not in a ubiquitously steady-state form.
You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the old model obsolete. R. Buckminster Fuller

I have a problem with the teacher deducting "points" from academic work as a punishment. The "punishment" should fit the "crime".
I have a problem with the teacher forbidding the saying of "bless you" because it is "not necessary."
I have no problem, however, with him forbidding the practice if he has determined that the students are doing this in an effort to disrupt his class, or if this practice is disrupting his class. Unless you've "been there and done that", i.e., stood in front of a classroom full of children - of any age - and tried to maintain a calm, orderly learning environment, then you probably do not understand why I would take that position.

Wonder what the penalty would be for saying, "Oh my God"?
While I'm not a "god" person - you have to believe that common sense would prevail in a situation like this. But, apparently not.
Atheist say, "Oh my God" probably near as frequent as theist. The term "bless you" is as common as apple pie.
Like NWP says, it was a "reflexive" or an unconscious comment, which is probably a common familial term to the kid.
And the world spins on...but just a wee bit crazier.
Turn on ANY brand of political machine - and it automatically goes to the "SPIN and LIE CYCLE"

When I want some stupid, I go for something a little more interesting. Rum slug stupid with rainbow sprinkles is my preference at the moment, but I'm thinking of going to something more minty, or maybe with peanut butter cups smooshed in.
