IMO, it makes no difference what one calls him/herself. More important is the realization that, underneath the meaningless layers of external junk we load upon ourselves during the course of a lifetime, we are all the same. We come from the same place and end up in the same place. (Kind of along the lines of the Van Morrison lyrics Mickey posted earlier.)
Possibly relevant to that thought, I saw a bumper sticker the other day: Leaving one's mark is overrated.

Some good guidelines are available from each religion. Where they converge is probably truth. The truth I know is that my home is located in the middle of the most spectacular cathedral on earth. Walking outside fills me with awe and I must acknowledge something greater than myself is present. If you look into a person's eyes, you should see yourself reflected. Life is good and spread love.
You are never alone and take that anyway you like.

I don't really care what she says she is, or what she believes, as long as it doesn't hurt or kill others and she doesn't force it on others.

...a little bit from US News & World Report I just happened to read at lunch today... Imagine the Life of Buddha By Jay Tolson Posted 6/17/07
Combining western scientific knowledge with eastern spiritual wisdom, Deepak Chopra has developed his own unique form of complementary, mind-body medicine. A hugely successful one-man industry with his own California-based Chopra Center for Wellbeing, the Indian-born physician has also made time to write some 49 books ranging from spiritual and medical advice to fiction. The most recent, Buddha, is a novel about the early life of the great spiritual leader, taking the Indian prince Siddhartha from his palace upbringing through his years as a seeker to his transformative enlightenment. Page 2 of 2 Do you consider yourself a Buddhist? No, I don't. What I find among Buddhists now are schisms, schools of thought, often with a lot of rigidity. So I don't consider myself Buddhist because I don't think Buddha himself believed in ideology or dogma. He would say that he was showing us very practical ways to get the same insights ourselves.
You have just finished a book about Jesus. How are the fundamental teachings of Jesus and Buddha similar and different? They are similar in relation to the golden rule—do unto others as you would have them do unto you—and in the total embodiment of nonviolence. You must turn the other cheek and love your enemies. Buddha says when you look deep enough into your enemy, you will see that he is yourself. But what Jesus calls sin, Buddha calls ignorance, lack of awareness. The God question is also very different. In the Judeo-Christian tradition, God created the universe, whereas in the Buddhist tradition, God, or the intelligence that is at the source of creation, is not some outside intelligence but is inherent in the consciousness that conceives, governs, and becomes the universe. Is there a fundamental tension between spirituality and religion? I think spirituality is a domain of awareness where we all experience our universality and where we experience universal truth. It has very little to do with religious dogma, ideology, or even self-righteous morality. The novel Buddha deals with the experience of a person and I hope shows that this is an experience that is open to all of us.

IMO, it makes no difference what one calls him/herself. Actually, it does. You cannot serve two masters. Since much of the two confessions is mutually exclusive - especially the core theological matters - I doubt seriously that either the respective adherents of each religious group would choose to recognize her as being one of them.

Good posts, BC and Ron G. That's why no matter how fervently I practice the teachings of Jesus, I would never call myself a "Christian". I just can't do that exclusionary theology thing, and am keenly aware of how central it is to the doctrines of Christianity. I'm not a Christian, I'm a Jesusite. Similarly, I'm not a Buddhist, but I am a Tao Te Ching-a-ling.

No...but you can believe there is only one God. Not contested. And if you are a Jew, Christian, Muslim, Ba'hai or even Hindu that is not a disputed point. But just as Judaism, Christianity and Islam are mutually incompatible, so would all be with Hinduism or Ba'hai. All of these have distinct notions of the nature of the deity.
