Lots of meteorological stereotyping going on! So many people think Buffalo, NY, is buried in snowdrifts for most--if not all--of the year. Right now there is no snow on the ground here in Amherst (a northern suburb of Buffalo) or in Buffalo itself. Nobody mentions that on the Weather Channel or the Evening News or the latenight talk shows. Last week, when our "ski country" (a good 40-50 miles south of Buffalo) got a lot of very welcome snow, the national TV reports said "Buffalo is getting hit again!" No place is a wonderful, weatherwise, as its positive PR, and no place is as terrible as some people like to think--not even Canada, NorCal, SoCal, or Nebraska. Well, maybe Nebraska.

Ditto here in Colorado. People always tell me they'd never live here...too cold and too much snow. It was 70 degrees in Denver yesterday...we're wishing for moisture this year!

Yesbut. I refer you to that Christmas Blizzard back in 1982. Not mentioned in this article is the fact that the cold that followed this storm was some of the worst ever. IIRC the temperature in Denver went to 20 or more below zero and did not get above freezing for several days.

One of the more interesting results of the storm:
Quote
Heading into the May elections the next year, the calamitous storm was fresh in voters’ minds as they went to the polls and a new era in Denver politics began when a young man half the age of his predecessor was elected to office – Federico Pena. Mayor Pena’s election brought about the end of the Bill McNichols’ era in Denver politics and Pena became the driving force behind the construction of Denver International Airport. For better or worse, if it weren’t for the Christmas Eve Blizzard of 1982, Federico Pena may never have been elected and we may still be flying out of Stapleton International Airport.

The only thing I really miss about Denver is the efficacy of swamp coolers. Don't work here in NC. And the restaurants. But a couple of years ago we were blessed in our little town with a Mexican restaurant that is as good now as La Cueva was when I lived there, and at around 1/4 the prices. And that's saying something! Ernesto is a master chef and his presentations are too beautiful to eat (until you take the first bite.)

Take the nacilbupeR pledge: I solemnly swear that I will help back out all Republicans at the next election.
