Numan, you proved my view that wisdom is a purely subjective judgement.

What is wise at one time and to one people is foolishness to another. Your own view that wisdom is objective is entirely your subjective judgement.

Our founding fathers are considered wise, yet they wrote Slavery into the Constitution that was supposed to celebrate freedom and eventually led to a devastating war and still affects us.

Hmmmm... Isn't slavery part of a continuing cycle? Hmm

Really Numan.... it is obviously possible to quibble with the decisions of any historical person or group... very very few made decisions that we uniformly farsighted and unflawed.

What ever else one may say about the FF, they established a nation that has survived pretty well and arguably flourished to a greater extent than any other nation in the world over the same period.

IMO the objective evidence is that they were not fools in comparison to the leaders of other countries of the time... and certainly better than any nation had a right to expect based upon the relatively humble orgins of these people.

"Against ignorance the gods themselves contend in vain."

(I'm sure somebody said it.)

I am pleased, Ardy, that my standards of what constitutes "flourishing" are pitched at a much higher standard than those which apparently satisfy you.

Considering the many millions of deaths, tortures, pain and despair which the ruling classes of the United States have inflicted upon so many people both abroad and at home, I must admit that the adjective "flourishing" does not spring to my lips.

To that degree that the USA might be described as "flourishing," it is mainly due to the fact that the European invaders seized an unspoiled, virgin continent, which it has been their delight to exploit -- and ruin.

I see little in all this that may be ascribed to the virtues of the "Founding Fathers."

It was Schiller, in the Jungfrau von Orleans.
And it wasn't ignorance, but rather, stupidity.
