In Greger's opening, was a Tom Lehrer ditty... It sent my mind back to 1955-1958, in the college years, when my bride was schooling at Sargent College in Harvard Square. I would hitchhike my way down from Maine for the weekends, and a favorite spot was Cronin's Pub in Harvard Square. Tom Lehrer was teaching at either MIT or Harvard, (not sure), and moonlighting at Cronin's. Beers were $.10 and they never checked your age. He was avant and somewhat risque by 1950's standards, and was adored by college students everywhere. We could all sing the words to all the songs, with all the nuances and timing.
Wonderful, simple times... when Catcher in the Rye was in everyone's bookcase, and Timothy Leary and Jack Kerouac were mystical figures and people only talked about drugs... and mushrooms and like that...

California 9th District Court of Appeals struck down Prop. 8 Gay marriage ban as unconstitutional-violation of equal protection clause.

Quote
A federal appeals court Tuesday struck down California's ban on same-sex marriage, clearing the way for the U.S. Supreme Court to rule on gay marriage as early as next year.

The 2-1 decision by a panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals found that Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot measure that limited marriage to one man and one woman, violated the U.S. Constitution. The architects of Prop. 8 have vowed to appeal.

The ruling was narrow and likely to be limited to California.

Don't get too happy, too soon. The decision still has to pass muster in the evil, reactionary Supreme Court in evil, reactionary Washington D.C.

Oh, I realize that the stay is still in place-but I have hope that the Supreme Court will see the light.

Rick:

If the judges lifted the stay and the case were reversed by the Supreme Court, there would be even more married couples in a state of limbo.

My prediction is that the SC will allow the case to skip the en banc stage because the conservatives on the high court will be looking for a win before the November election.

Remember, the Ninth Circuit is the most liberal in the country, so there's little likelihood there will be a reversal at that level.

Take the nacilbupeR pledge: I solemnly swear that I will help back out all Republicans at the next election.

Thanks for noticing that, Bob. There are some aspects of those years I wish we could have back. I was introduced to Tom Lehrer's music at an early age by an older half sister who was atttending Purdue. I immediately became a fan.
