Good lord. These people are nuts. Ender's Game is one of the finest books I've read in any genre.

I know nothing about the book or author and the article doesn't indicate whether the school has an approved book list, but seems an overreaction on the part of the school.

The article is a bit over-broad in suggesting this is a free speech issue -- teachers do not have unlimited speech rights when working.

True, Phil. People frequently don't understand the limits of free speech in the US.

That is beyond ridiculous. The Ender series is basically a YA product. This has to be something religious in origin, because there is absolutely no sex and very little violence in any of the books, most of which I have read and which I believe my 14-y-o daughter has read as well.

I'm in agreement with everyone else. Ender's Game is an excellent book and in my opinion particularly poignant for these times.
As I recall there is nothing in it which would proscribe it even for the most conservative young Christian readers.

Card's a Mormon, a conservative one at that, which may explain the anathema towards him. Lives near Greensboro NC and one of his novels was set in afictional town in the NC foothills. Seems to me it was called Lost Boys. A lot different from his other stuff, but compelling reading on several levels.

That's what Card thinks:

Lost Boys it is. Although it's supernatural, it also seems to me to be semi-autobiographical. I liked it. The ending is particularly touching.

I have told this story before, but when I was the sound man for a pantomime troupe (yeah, ironic, no?), I was in charge of selecting music for various skits. One called for an "epiphany" scene, and I selected a song from Yes' "Tales from Topographic Oceans." One of the troupe members went apesh!t, asking, "Is that Yes?" I told her it was. She screamed, "turn it off, that is devil music!"... I lost it - the name of the song was, "The Revealing Science of God." Anyone who knows Yes would realize that they were a precursor to Christian Rock, but self-realization was not on her agenda. These people were brainwashed. They had also participated in ritual album burning.... btw, she was subsequently institutionalized for a mental breakdown (10 years later).

Here, as elsewhere, people are outraged at what feels like a rigged game -- an economy that won't respond, a democracy that won't listen, and a financial sector that holds all the cards. - Robert Reich

While I agree with you on the "no sex" in Ender's Game, the entire book is about violence. Violence between siblings. Violence between classmates, two of whom are killed by Ender. Violence in video games. Violence in team competition. Violence of war between species. The resolution of the book is the violent xenocide of the alien species by destroying their home planet.

The focus of the book is about what level of violence is appropriate in response to violence, and Orson Scott Card presents answers to that question on all the levels brought up.
