Threatened with lawsuit, Miss. agriculture museum processing application for same-sex ceremonyJACKSON, Miss. — Faced with the threat of a federal lawsuit, Mississippi officials have relented on a ban on same-sex commitment ceremonies at a state-owned museum and are processing a permit for two women. The Southern Poverty Law Center sent a letter to the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum in Jackson on July 12, threatening to sue if officials didn’t allow Ceara Sturgis, 20, and her partner, Emily Key, 19, to hold a ceremony there this fall. Republican Mississippi Agriculture Commissioner Cindy Hyde-Smith said in a statement Thursday that same-sex ceremonies are against her religious and personal beliefs, but there’s nothing in state law to block prohibit them. She said the museum is processing the permit application, but there are several steps and it hasn’t been finalized. Yes! Yes! Yes!

Isn't it amazing how reasonable even the stiffest necked people get when you reach for their pocketbooks? To hell with my religion! We're talking money here!

Prosperity is next to piety. I thought it was cleanliness is next to godliness? Or is that Cleanliness is next to Cleavage?

Really? Somebody wants to have their commitment ceremony at the Agriculture Museum? Those ladies must have a deep abiding love of farming, is all I can say!
I wish them the best!

I wish them the best too, and I think they bested the bigoted Mississippi Agriculture Commissioner Cindy Hyde-Smith, too. I frankly don't give a fig what her religious convictions are... apparently, she had a good lawyer who could explain in words of one syllable what her responsibilities are, and they don't include shoving her bigotry down other peoples' throats.
I feel better now, thanks.
A well reasoned argument is like a diamond: impervious to corruption and crystal clear - and infinitely rarer.
Here, as elsewhere, people are outraged at what feels like a rigged game -- an economy that won't respond, a democracy that won't listen, and a financial sector that holds all the cards. - Robert Reich
