I've heard that uttered twice, by the same left-leaning pundit: John Kenneth Galbraith. The first was after the landslide defeat of Goldwater by Johnson in 1964; the second was less than a decade later, as Nixon boarded the helicopter taking him to his self-created disgrace.

Consequently, I tend to view with considerable skepticism such sweeping political claims. :/
