I just found this posted on RT.com , the Russian side of the site, and had to share. Please go to the site and see the pictures of Kiara, the new liliger's family. The new kitty is a cross between an African Lion and her Mum is a cross between a tiger and lion. Hence, the name "liliger".

It is unusual for hybrid crosses to be able to reproduce, so there must be something going on here to make this new breed possible, if it can be called a breed as of yet. Those are among many issues to be resolved by zoo managers and bio-ethicists.
Quote
The world’s first liliger has been born in a Siberian zoo. Her father is an African lion, her mother is a cross between a tiger and a lion, and she herself is a little cutie with tiger stripes on her forehead.

The cub, named Kiara, was born in late August in a zoo in the Russian city of Novosibirsk. Her mother, a liger called Zita, took care of her at first, but vets had to take the cub away as Zita did not have enough milk to feed her.

The cub was not left alone for long though, as it was quickly adopted by a household cat.

Despite early problems Kiara has been deemed healthy and according to zoo specialists is starting to “grow and develop.” Zoo visitors should be able to see the wonder cub in October.
I checked with Einstein, and he told me that while God does not play dice with the Universe, these sorts of crosses are sometimes done because zookeepers can. And the cats cooperate. There may be some vestige of biological advantage to these crosses, because while sterility is a problem for crosses, any ability to reproduce indicates some advantage overall for this particular cross breeding.

Einstein -the Boy Genius, also swears he was not involved. He blamed me, Lillibet, his pet person. I can assure you, I had nothing at all to do with this lovely new addition to zoo-dom, although they could have named her Lilibettiger. I'm just saying.

Kiara, the new liliger, has a winning smile, and eyes that will melt hearts for years to come. She is one cute feline, and will be an attraction for many years to come.
