James Bond films celebrate 50th anniversary
CBS/AP
October 5, 2012

Quote
On this day 50 years ago, James Bond became a movie star.

The British superspy first hit the big screen on Oct. 5, 1962, when Dr. No opened in theaters, introducing Ian Fleming's suave 007 to the masses.

Did you know that Ian Fleming did not want Sean Connery to play Bond? He did not believe that Connery was polished enough to play a gentleman.

And just as Anne Rice changed her mind about Tom Cruise playing Lestat, Fleming reversed his position once he saw the completed movie. I am so glad he did. Connery was, and will remain, the only Bond worth watching.

Fleming was quite right -- Connery's Bond is no gentleman.

He is, no doubt, what many a cad might imagine a gentleman to be.

If Fleming reversed himself later, it was no doubt for publicity reasons, rather than a genuine change of heart. The sort of thing one might imagine a cad would do. · · wink

Welcome back, graypanther! Fleming wanted Roger Moore to play Bond. Flemming said that Connery looked like a bricklayer. Unless he changed his mind, Connery said that Dr. No was his favorite Bond. Connery is and always will be the best Bond.
