Clearly, there is an opportunity for a Geek here... there are right-handed scissors, and left-handed scissors. The charming woman is left-handed and cannot use right-handed scissors, at least not without enhanced understanding of the mechanics and training in using right-handed scissors in the left hand (it can be successfully accomplished, but is quite awkward).

Now that there is funny. There are right handed tin snips and left handed tin snips but both are wielded with the right hand....

I really think the paraffin on the blades, the double sided tape, the director insisting that one side of the four identical sided box was somehow more photogenic, and the general fed-up-ness of the wrapper means someone is not staying on the Nice List this year. Or, she's related to my cousin who entertained us with a tale of teaching 30 spoiled second graders as she made a toast at Thanksgiving, "I sincerely hope each and every one of the darling but uncontrollable monsters in my class choke to death on their turkey." Seriously. There were no fatalities that year related to children, choking and turkey. She also apparently fell off the "Nice List." There was a lump of coal in one stocking though. Hers. Santa pleaded the Fifth. Grandpa tapped a fifth and declared it good. Cousin had a glass herself, being a student teacher and over legal age at that time. Barely. Then she had a second. Years later I confessed, noting in my defense that I had wrapped the coal in cello-wrap to avoid making a mess.

It's a matter of rigididitty and tolerances. The natural forces exerted by the hand cause the shearing edges to come together, or to separate, depending upon the handedness. It just so happens that left-handed tin snips work better in the left hand, a condition especially noticeable when they become worn. Scissors are not as stout as snips, and are more likely to fail to function correctly in the adverse hand.
This ol' boy speaks of experience, having ripped about a mile o' tin roofing by hand. (I also have been know to sew a so-so amount). ("Tin roofing", by the way, is a perversion of "terne", and has nothing to do with tin (for noomie))

I still think the scissors were tampered with. They didn't sound right. I'm ambidextrous and often use right handed scissors in the left hand, and it does require some maneuvering. But, even without maneuvering, righties in the left hand don't sound quite like the way those clippers did. Maybe it's just my ears, but I think the double sided tape was an indicator that tampering was in play to bring out her 'better' side. It also makes me glad to know our family avoids all that kerfuffle by using gift bags that are recycled year to year. If you're careful, you never need a scissor, and you can get about 6 years out of each one. Of course, getting unders in the bag with the little duckies parading under a decorated tree on it, is becoming a bit too predictable, no matter how much the restocking of my drawers is appreciated.

It is why I prefer gift bags. About the same cost, no scissors required, and the bags can be used again and again!
