For the followers of the orange and black they received little in the way of financial support for AT & T ballpark. There was some infrastructure in the area that the city provided and they pay to lease the land at prevailing market rates. Otherwise it was financed by the team. The area does generate a plus financially as most stadiums do. The stadium debt is almost finished so the Giants will have some free cash but the Giants also maintain a high payroll as they were 8th in team payroll for the 2012 season.
The Giants are also not immune from fiscal downfalls and the exorbitant contract of Barry Zito is an example. The Giants also paid Matt Cain the highest contract for a right handed pitcher in baseball history until the Dodgers signed Greinke.
The Dodgers are in a unique situation. They are on the verge of signing a local TV contract that will pay them 250M a season for 25 years. This is in addition to all the other numerous revenue streams so money has not become an issue. As far as their payroll when you consider payroll as a percentage of revenue they are in the middle of the pack but that revenue dwarfs everyone else with the exception of the Yankees.
Can you buy a pennant? Most certainly and many examples exist in baseball. The Dodgers can make mistakes and write it off. Since the inception of free agency the Yankees have been the most successful team in baseball and that consistency has its roots in revenue.
The real good news! Baseball contracts are a depreciated expense in sports.

As someone who almost never follows sports (and when I do it is only football - soccer to y'all) I find that most every professional sport becomes a stygian cesspool of corruption because of the money. Suggestion: why not make all sports amateur - nobody gets paid, you do it because you want to. You get a stipend to train, etc. But you have to have a day job. And you have to have an education. And competitions can be free, or almost free (just cover the basic cost of the venue).

Most sports and their participants are already amateurs.
The professional level started to fiscally expand for management and players with the advent of TV.

Doesn't everything within the human realm? Unfortunately, YES!

Just to be clear: watching a game is not the issue. Changing the way money affects the game is. And if I had to choose I would take a sports program any day over this so-called "reality TV". Could anything be more "unreal"?

The difference, dear, as if the difference really needs to be pointed-out, is that pro-players get the money upfront. "Reality TV players" get the money at the back-end AND after they earn the money first. "If" said reality TV player wins - it's only a measly million. Helllloooo... We can only wish that pro-players made a measly million.
