Why do you think they are termite resistant? They poison the poor termites !!

Aha! Glueboard !! Folks make houses outta that stuff? Not that type of glueboard. The kind numan and I are speaking of has a two-fold purpose in homebuilding: 1. Structural integrity for earthquakes 2. Firewall ...it's really thick "plywood" that's made from recycled woodchips and glue.

Could you please support that claim with a link? When you buy a brand-new home now-a-days Phil, you sign a waiver releasing the builder from liability because the homes are so air-tight (liquid foam that fills in cracks and expands creating an air-tight seal, for example) the waiver describes gases from the made-made materials which can be toxic inside the home. The document is explained to you at escrow closing.

Maybe you are talking about oriented strand board, commonly known as OSB? Jeez, noomie, I thought you was a expert in speakin' English... Ya'll sure git careless when it comes to the manly arts and makin' things. And ya didn't seem to notice my warnings about your fine 1950's house probably having lead paint and plywood (made with glue, much like your chipboard) in it. Mebbee you better get a home inspection and find out what kind o' poison hell-hole yer livin' in...

A 1950s home isn't very air-tight and not much man-made plastics in them.

They did have more natchrul materials that are good for the environment in them, like wood from old-growth trees, insulation and floor coverings made from perlite and asbestos from well-regulated mining operations, and maybe some carcinogen-treated rot resistant wood parts. And, of course, the draftiness helped with interior air quality issues and the heating systems were at least 40% efficient.

Forests nationwide are faced with the problem of being overstocked with woody biomass that has low or negative value, which presents a liability in terms of unhealthy watershed ecosystems and poses a growing risk for catastrophic wildfire. Few uses exist for the bulk of this material that are of high enough value to defray the costs of thinning, and most utilization strategies involve converting it to energy, which does not serve to replicate the carbon sequestration function of the forest. A parallel concern is that modern building materials are expensive, have high embodied energy and carbon footprints, and are rarely sourced or manufactured in rural communities. This Phase 1 project would research the feasibility of utilizing low value woody biomass in a high value building envelope system that would; facilitate forest restoration thinning, reduce fossil fuel consumption associated with the construction of buildings, create substantial new economic activity in rural communities, and produce a building envelope system with superior performance characteristics. From what I can gather, this material would be made from wood chips - is this what noomie means by chipboard?
