They did have more natchrul materials that are good for the environment in them, like wood from old-growth trees, insulation and floor coverings made from perlite and asbestos from well-regulated mining operations, and maybe some carcinogen-treated rot resistant wood parts. And, of course, the draftiness helped with interior air quality issues and the heating systems were at least 40% efficient.
