They did have more natchrul materials that are good for the environment in them, like wood from old-growth trees, insulation and floor coverings made from perlite and asbestos from well-regulated mining operations, and maybe some carcinogen-treated rot resistant wood parts. And, of course, the draftiness helped with interior air quality issues and the heating systems were at least 40% efficient.
Ah, the good ol' days! Pick one: higher energy costs or toxic indoor air. Can't have everything...

A very Christmassy morning here in NorCal: 38°F I remember an 87°F Christmas in El Lay as I kid and resented the 'good weather' on that particular day - of all days of the year to be sunny and warm...
