It's so odd that we hear the Commander in Chief comparing the debacle in Iraq to the debacle in Vietnam based on hypotheticals, but refusing to make the comparison based on reality. No one knows for certain what will happen as a result of replacing US fighting forces with a contingent of Arab peacekeepers, but everyone knows
exactly what is happening as a result of
not doing that.
Addressing the question of "winning" or "losing", I'd like to suggest that we stop thinking in those terms. We didn't go into Iraq with a declared purpose of "winning" anything. It was all about "stopping Saddam" and "freeing the Iraqi people", remember? When someone talks about "winning", they're treading the dangerous ground of imperialism. We have no right, under domestic or international law, to wage a war of imperialism, and no business basing policy on "winning" it.
We know now that the promised report from Gen. Petraeus will never be delivered. As
Raw Story reports this morning, on CBS's
Face The Nation last weekend, Bob Schieffer had the temerity to tell the truth about the so-called "Petraeus Report":
Excuse me for getting a little suspicious . . .
. . . the White House want[s] the general to deliver the report to Congress behind closed doors while Cabinet officers do the talking in public. And suddenly we're told the general won't actually write the report, but that his thoughts will be included in a summary prepared by the White House.
This is the report the president has said over and over that he will use to decide where we go from here in Iraq. Maybe it's because I've been dragged down the old rabbit trail too many times by too many people with something to hide, but this does not sound like we're headed to a straight answer.
Yes, you and the rest of the Librul Media have been pulled down the rabbit hole time after time. And you've pulled many of our fellow citizens right in after you. Will it be any different this time?
