Had to put this here because couldn't find a more appropriate place. The question is about the rules of the forum. One of the posting guidelines is that one may not attack an elected official.
Vladimir Putin is an elected official. Sort of. Not in the U.S., but an elected official.
And I was struck in my recent reading of a very impressive book by a Kansas U history professor about Catherine the Great by the incredibly close parallels between the Crimea strategies of Vladimir Putin and the last of the great Czarinas.
So the culture question is: is it out of bounds to wonder whether Vlad shares Catherine's affinity for horses?

As I contemplated the posting of this question, I also was struck by the close similarities between Russian and Israeli foreign policy: plant your people in territory outside your legal boundaries, then use the presence of your people in those territories as a justification for taking over the land where your people were planted.
Bibi, meet Vlad; Vlad, meet Bibi!

Sounds a lot like some tenets of American manifest destiny, too.
