Actually, they followed the accepted laws of the land. Back then, might made right.
Wrong, they followed their dumb luck because anytime a high energy/high tech civilization meets a low energy civilization the latter always end up with the short end of the stick.

That wasn't a "law" unless you're talking about the law of the jungle. In that case, I'm following the law if I bust into your house with an AK, rape your wife, steal your flatscreen and force you to drive me to an ATM where I empty out your savings account.
