Another thing. Bearing in mind that I am not the most widely read nor well-educated person in the world, but I was under the impression that the Renaissance came first, and the Enlightenment thereafter, and that the former was triggered by the discovery and resurgent popularity of Roman and Greek philosophy.
One final point of confusion. Wasn't the Pope "top dog" [i]prior to" the Renaissance?
