I hear that, Mellow Julia. Nevertheless, the birth father still was not consulted, according to the article.

Good one Ron. Coincidentally, I heard a segment on GMA today on the subject of the "obesity epidemic". I was not surprised to learn that Mississippi ranks first in the nation in obesity. I was surprised to learn that West Virginia is also in the top tier. The least obese States are Massachusetts, Vermont, and . . . Colorado!

But I digress. Sorry. [Linked Image from aximsite.com]

Steve, there's no information about the boy's father - none at all that I can see - not whether he's alive or dead, not even if his name is known. I'm sorry, but I'm not following you. You think an apparent lack of communication with the boy's father should affect what happens to the girl, am I'm reading you right?

I stand by my belief that, were this father living anywhere other than Castro's Cuba, Conservatives would be screaming about the state sanctioning the the removal of a child from her father's custody in the absence of documented child abuse.

However, solely because the Republicans need to carry the Florida electoral votes in 2008 in order to retain the White House, every single Conservative, without exception, will fully endorse the Nanny State declaring that only a Politically Correct set of people can have this child.

Gratuitious, snide comments that always substitute for debating points among Conservatives. Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh would be proud.

And when the Democrats pander for the votes of illegals in 2008, it will be done for only the most altruistic of motives, with absolutely no concern as to electoral objectives?
What does that have to do with a child custody case? Other than to bring in the usual Conservative racist slant to everything they want politically.

No, Julia, you are not reading me right. What I think is that if the boy can be adopted by the foster family without his father's permission, it would seem to follow naturally that the girl could be adopted by the foster family without her father's permission.

I understand your "could," but I find that to be a very long way from "should."

Normally I wouldn't bother to respond to such patently partisan pappery, but this particular bomb in your barrage of snide remarks segues nicely into this latest news from CBS:
Quote
In an adjacent room, the boy told the court how he and his half sister were abused by their mother in Cuba before they fled to South Florida, and the father, Rafael Izquierdo, did nothing about it.

<SNIP>

In his testimony today, the boy said the father knew his daughter was being abused by Perez, but looked the other way. He said she would "beat" him and his half sister, even "pull her by the hair". He also said he saw her try to "commit suicide". The boy said knowing all of this, the father let them go to South Florida under her care.
I suspect the judge in the case will likely come to a different conclusion than you have, Philly Steve, much more in line with the evidence in the case than with partisan blindness, IMHO.

Steve, there were allegations of abuse in at least one of the articles posted earlier, and it did give me pause. But once again, I am unwilling to trust the media on this (or almost anything else.) I just don't think it's a slam-dunk, although if the allegations of abuse are proven, I agree that it changes everything.

One piece I haven't figured out, and that is why the birth father didn't just stay on his farm in Cuba. No one has said that he's trying to use this to get into the States; if that's not the case, why would he bother trying to get this child, if he didn't want her? It's not a small task.
