Zeke, that's a truly awful and inflammatory article. Mostly true, but awful nonetheless. Life was short, ugly and brutal in those days. I'll be the first to admit that early pagans used human sacrifice but even the Romans eventually went to sacrificing animals rather than people. I guess that's where the expression "the awful truth" comes from  FYI I completely understand and do not judge them since their belief system was the result of a flawed interpretation of how the world works. One that they had no way of knowing was flawed, at the time.
