The good news is that renewables are ready to handle the job of running a modern economy, so we don’t need to rely on natural gas as a “bridge” to a carbon-free future. Unfortunately, that is not true. Like I said, PV solar panels are terrific, but they don't work worth spit on a cloudy day much less at night. Wind power is great, if the wind is blowing and you have constructed giant bird-killing machines. And we are pretty much topped out on hydro power. In fact they are removing dams, which is cutting hydro power and drought can stop hydro power generation. So what to do? Simple, replace all the old coal plants with natural gas which is incredibly easy and cheap to do. This would drive up the price of natural gas and make it worthwhile for producers to stop the leaks. BTW, even the article image showed a burning gas plume, which converts methane (bad greenhouse gas) into water and CO2 (not nearly as bad). The gas is there and it's probably leaking into the atmosphere already. If you burn it, it's very much better in terms of the greenhouse effect.

There is NO way to make fracking 100 percent safe but the current list of safety rules which are ENFORCED by LAW is zero thanks to the exemptions that the fracking industry gets due to Cheney's little meeting back in 2001. The oil and gas industry are largely exempt from clean water and clean air acts.
Naturally frackers insist that enforcing safety regs would bankrupt them, just like the car industry claimed seat belts, fuel efficiency and all that what not would bankrupt THEM.
But even while 100% safety isn't possible, it IS possible to frack in a manner which is significantly safer, if the industry either gives a damn (which it doesn't) or if we overrule Cheney's exemptions and enforce EPA rules for clean water and air.
And it's not just the fracking side of the business either, the entire oil and gas industry could care less. Witness the negligence that caused the gigantic Porter Ranch gas leak which just got sealed last week. It's the methane equivalent of the Macondo oil blowout of 2010.
SoCal Gas Co might get a couple of misdemeanors out of that, and a few lawsuits, which it will shake off like fleas.

And the stupid even burns hot in California, by the way. We are NOT as on board with rooftop solar as one might think! SoCal Couple Says Solar Panels Too Powerful "They’re hooked up, but they’re not turned on," Hall said. "They’re saying that the system that I have will generate 128 percent, that’s 28 percent over what they estimated." SoCal Edison did not allow the Halls to activate their system because it exceeded state standards for residential energy production. I'll let you digest that for a moment...the utility is upset because the Hall Family is generating more power than SoCal Edison wants them to, so SoCal Edison won't let them activate the system. Way to go, California!

Republicans are fighting tooth and nail against rooftop solar here in Floriduh too. A state where there is way more sunshine than common sense. Power companies would be able to take any excess power generated which would cost them nothing and sell it directly to other consumers. I really don't understand what their problem is. But as the years wear on I find myself only more and more baffled by Republicans.

SoCal Edison did not allow the Halls to activate their system because it exceeded state standards for residential energy production. They must be trying to generate a news story. There's no reason Solar City could not remove a few solar panels and make the system fall within the required output. It would have been a lot easier than removing the entire system. It is just a matter of disconnecting a few wires and unscrewing the panel clips. Or they could even leave the panels there and just unhook a few. I bet it would have taken 15 minutes on their roof.

They must be trying to generate a news story. And apparently they succeeded or we wouldn't be talking about it here. Rooftop solar is the biggest no brainer in the energy market today. Power companies, rather than fighting it, should be selling, installing and maintaining it.

It’s not been without its problems however. Hawaii has so many roof top panels-by far the most per capita in the nation- their electric company has been having trouble integrating it all into the main grid. I sure it’s something that will be resolved but I think it will take some to to make this all work smoothly. Link
