It was fast and fortunately the cops were wounded but not seriously. They got him alive too. The operation was actually pretty well executed. The info is sketchy but seems like a bungling lone wolf. American citizen of Afghan descent. Investigation still ongoing .
They essentially deputized every New Yorker with a cell phone.

Like I said, in custody within the week. Making bombs in such a way that you don't get caught is VERY difficult. Even if they have exploded, most explosives include millions of microscopic tags that lead investigators right to the point of origin.
More primitive explosives like gunpowder are all registered sales.

Especially if they defuse a bomb. Much easier to get both. The other thing amateurs overlook is fingerprints on shell casings. They wipe a gun clean but leave shell casings at the scene of the crime. Pros pick up or retain all their casings.

It appears that the motivation is quite personal. The family business is failing. They blame it on religion. I think there's no clear indication of motivation yet. That said: in spite of indications that he may have been radicalized, he was a bungler. Almost as if he wanted to get caught. The family restaurant, I'm sure, suffered prejudice, especially in NJ. The whole thing seems very off. He doesn't seem to be cooperating, so, it's not clear we'll ever really know much. It's sad. I'm just glad no one was killed and the injuries sustained were not as bad as they could have been.
