Hey you kids: Get off my lawn! Let's see, where was that AARP aplication?

Glad it didn't get up to your house! I think you are up in the pan handle, but I heard about Lake Okeechobee topping it's dikes and flooding central Florida during some past hurricanes. Not in the panhandle. If you put your finger smack in the middle of the state on the map that's where I am. About 25 miles west of Orlando. Even closer to Disney. I live on the eastern edge of Florida's Green Swamp 870 square miles of mostly wilderness.
Good coffee, good weed, and time on my hands...

And down a very red sand road...
A well reasoned argument is like a diamond: impervious to corruption and crystal clear - and infinitely rarer.
Here, as elsewhere, people are outraged at what feels like a rigged game -- an economy that won't respond, a democracy that won't listen, and a financial sector that holds all the cards. - Robert Reich

Sorry I won't ever get down there to visit you: My wife and I are both biologists by undergraduate training so we loved the Everglades and Key West was pretty mellow in a Jimmy Buffet kind of way. But Orlando, Miami, Epcot all were very disappointing. Likewise diving off Key West. I have been to meet with NASA at the space center about a project I did for them, and that was interesting.
The neatest thing about the state from a System Ecologist's point of view is how much biomass is tied up in mosquitoes! But my wife attracts every mosquito in the vicinity and really reacts to their bites. It was not a fun visit.

down a very red sand road... That's what is commonly called Georgia Red Clay. I guess they have it in Georgia too. It's mined locally and used for unpaved county maintained roads. There's 3 miles of it between me and the nearest pavement. PIA I don't blame anybody for hating Florida for many reasons. The heat, the humidity, the bugs, the incredibly boring piney woods and prairies, the alligators and snakes and probably most of all Floridaman! You've seen him in a thousand headlines. Florida Man Covers Himself in Ashes, Says He's a 400-Year-Old Indian, Crashes Stolen Car Florida Man Puts Dragon Lizard in His Mouth, Smacks People with It Florida Man Who Had Sex with Dolphin Says It Seduced Him Florida Man's Church Loses Tax-Exempt Status Because It's Just a Nightclub Florida Man Impersonating a Police Officer Pulls Over Real Cops And many more But it's home to me and I really wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Kauai also has very red sand. It's like being on Mars. Seriously.

I would live on Kauai. My favorite island, even though my wife is from Maui. It's her favorite island, too. Doesn't get ridiculously hot there, though the humidity gets up there now and then.
One fun fact about Hawaii: Build your house out of concrete blocks and steel. The termites EAT wood houses like crazy. More than one of my wife's relatives had to just demolish their houses and build another. I had to go over and put a new plywood floor in my MIL's house, so she wouldn't fall through it!

While the climate doesn't appeal to me in the least, those headlines are enough to get me to visit the place.
