But in the end when the candidates were asked what they respect about each other he gave Madame Clinton an enormous gift. "She's a fighter, she never gives up."

The deplorables are rationalizing that since Clinton did not deliver the knockout blow, Trump won.

The deplorables are rationalizing that since Clinton did not deliver the knockout blow, Trump won. Sometimes the bout goes the full five rounds and you just have to wait for the judges' decision. Donald threw more punches but I think Hillary landed more significant strikes. Donald seemed to be reeling even though he never went down. My score: 48-44 Clinton over Trump.

Again a fight analogy....Cardio is everything. Trump was totally gassed by the end, his arms were heavy and his counterpunching weak. He threw everything he had but his opponent was still fresh and could have gone five more rounds.

Aren't those all very good reasons why insurance should be national? Let me be a little more explicit: If we had one national set of insurance policies, then everybody in the country with a particular policy would pay the same premium. But health care costs in Oklahoma City might be 2/3 the cost of the same health care in Los Angeles or New York City. So the customers in Oklahoma City would be paying for for 2/3 X dollars worth of health care and the customers in LA would be paying the very same premium for X dollars worth of health care. Hence the people of LA would be paying less than their share and the people of Oklahoma City would be paying more, thus subsidizing the folks on the coasts. If you make state or regional premiums to fairly cover health care costs, then you have what we have now.

Give me back my broken night my mirrored room, my secret life it's lonely here, there's no one left to torture Give me absolute control over every living soul And lie beside me, baby, that's an order! Give me crack and anal sex Take the only tree that's left and stuff it up the hole in your culture Give me back the Berlin wall give me Stalin and St Paul I've seen the future, brother: it is murder. Summing it up: Clinton could have done better; Trump could have done worse. Some turn this into an equation which Trump won... It's more like Clinton didn't dispatch him and he didn't step off the cliff - the two expectations. But I'm guessing he didn't pick up any new votes and the exodus of Republican politicians will continue. His loyal base will blame the Liberal media for his poor performance while trumpeting that he "won". Even though Trump spoke for more time and committed many, many more interruptions. What is wrong with those people? Regarding optics (the facts are irrelevant), Clinton appeared far more vigorous and in command (she didn't need to attack Trump pointedly, that was probably her biggest error). She was also was mostly positive. Trump was entirely negative.

Sally Kohn sums up Trump's performance this way: Question after question, Trump said nothing. I mean, words came out of his mouth but they barely formed sentences and they definitely didn't form thoughts. He basically vomited fragments of nothingness all over Hillary Clinton and America. And like Clinton, we all just had to sit there — frustrated and annoyed.
What's especially depressing is that our media, let alone our democracy, seems ill-equipped to handle anything like Trump. Martha Raddatz and Anderson Cooper tried, but fact checking Trump doesn't work because Trump doesn't care about facts. In fact, he denies he's lying as he's lying and then, for extra audacity, accuses everyone else of being liars. I keep waiting for the ghost of George Orwell to show up on the debate stage and bite Trump on the ankles.
Donald Trump is a perverse man who is perverting not only our democracy but the very concept of truth. He tried to win the debate just like one wins a limbo contest — by lowering the bar. That should depress all of us.
