Because we are human beings. A civil war is not going to get everybody wanting the same things. We will never all want the same things.
But we could work on getting to value cooperation as much as we do competition. We are inundated from early childhood with the high value of competition, so some see everything in life as winners and losers. We would all be a lot happier if we could see some things the other way.
