Theresa May defends refusal to guarantee EU citizens' rights in UK The EU will not (and cannot legally) enter into any preliminary discussions before the UK triggers the formal process (Article 50). All early attempts by the UK have failed and the EU has not budged. Its going to play hardball. Central issue that freedom of movement and full access to the single market is a package deal. UK just wants access to the single market with all benefits but few of the duties. Ireland has been holding "discussions" with UK and the devolved administrations. Its going to be a nightmare. A new border, trade tariffs, end of free movement, new bureaucracy. UK is our second biggest trade partner. (Belgium is biggest in value due to pharmaceutical exports) I hate 2016, but I suspect that I might be looking upon it with comparative fondness by this time next year.

Exactly, people everywhere are cursing 2016, but wait till they get a load of what 2017 has in store for them.

I didn't expect Brexit to be implemented smoothly. The requirement from the start was that people would actually have to give something up. As is often the case, voters were told of the things they would gain without mention of what they would actually have to sacrifice for these gains. And as is also often the case the sacrifices are likely to heavily outweigh the gains.
With the election of Donald Trump U.S.citizens chose to exit the Union of Common Sense and Decency without a single thought about what this was going to cost in the long run.

I have serious doubts that it will be implemented at all.

While the Brits may somehow dodge the Brexit bullet, I fear we are doomed to implement the Trump Administration next month.
