A commenter on another blog: Jesus is the only Reason for the season. There is no such thing as a mythological “holiday season.” There is only the Advent and Christmas season. Hanukkah is not a holiday and you can’t find it in the Jewish version of the Old Testament. If the Jews want to win friends and influence people, then they should cease trying to step on the Christian Christmas. As a Greek Orthodox Christian , I find Hanukkah to be very offfensive. If the Jews want to make a big deal about a Jewish holiday, then they can emphasize Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur or even Purim, but stay away from Christmas. Erm...to suggest that one mythology is more real than another mythology, I mean...Piffle. So Merry Christmakwanzivusanakah Ranters

To the Orthodox idiot from the previous post: clearly you are unaware of the history of the season... which predates Christianity by centuries. Jesus might have been the "reason for the season" if it were held in... June? September? Certainly NOT December. BTW, a Greek Orthodox Christian would be celebrating Christmas on January 6. Correction, 7th.

A well reasoned argument is like a diamond: impervious to corruption and crystal clear - and infinitely rarer.
Here, as elsewhere, people are outraged at what feels like a rigged game -- an economy that won't respond, a democracy that won't listen, and a financial sector that holds all the cards. - Robert Reich

the Roman Catholic Church ripped off the pagans Winter Solstice and stole it for themselves. Even though I'm a pagan and that's the story we prefer, there is some historical doubt about it. The Christians base the time of birth as nine months past the conception of Christ. The Jan 6 date is probably more accurate than Dec 25. But the "shepherds watching over their flocks" part of the story puts the birth sometime in the spring. Shepherds don't take their flocks out to graze in the dead of winter. Mostly they just mix and match the stories and none of them are likely to be true.

First and foremost, if there was a Jesus he considered himself a Jew. Chosen people, covenant with God, circumcised and all. If you want to be like Jesus, convert.
The other important thing nobody ever mentions is that he was a bastard, in the literal sense. When you remove all the mythology added later, his mother had sex with some man who did not marry her. And not with the man who later married her. I think his origin is important because it shows that the lowest of the low can become a great man.
