Edward Lewis, a producer who helped break the Hollywood blacklist with "Spartacus" by hiring "subversive" screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, and who later shared an Oscar nomination with his wife for producing "Missing," about the death of an American writer in Chile, died July 27, 2019.

Author Toni Morrison, the first black woman to win the Nobel Prize in literature, died on Aug. 6, 2019. Morrison, seen on Oct. 7, 1993, at her office in Princeton University in New Jersey, died following a short illness, her family said in a statement. She was 88.

Chris Kraft, the creator and longtime leader of NASA's Mission Control, died July 22, 2019, just two days after the 50th anniversary of what was his and NASA's crowning achievement: Apollo 11's moon landing. Kraft, right, shown in a 1981 photo with President Ronald Reagan, was 95.
