Hmm
What's strange to me though, is that it looks to me that, with our current administration, we are heading to a tyrannical government - and not one gun shot was fired.

This administration is not bound by the same rules that apply to the rest of us....

What do you mean, "Maybe it's a Michigan thing..."?

Of course, it is a Michigan thing. For over a century, only emergency and maintenance vehicles are allowed on the Island. From the airport to the Grand Hotel it is fairly, heavily forested and the air is fresh and natural. No place on the island is far from any place else and a horse and buggy get you there with a relaxing ride.

The only way to the island is by boat or small aircraft. The island is about 5 miles (ca. 8 km) away from the main land (the upper peninsula) and the straits both of them have strong currents making it diffucult to swim to the island, plus all the lake ship traffic just adds to the hazard. So, it is easy to control who gets to the island. This rule about motor vehicles has been in existence since 1898. Mackinac Island is also an Historical Preservation location as well as a State Park.

Here is a Wiki link to information about the Island https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mackinac_Island

Come to Michigan, go to Mackinac Island for a few days...

I was there a little over 2 years ago. Mackinac was on my bucket list for 50 years. It did not disappoint. Pence is a jerk. I'm not surprised, really, that it created this stir.

A well reasoned argument is like a diamond: impervious to corruption and crystal clear - and infinitely rarer.

Here, as elsewhere, people are outraged at what feels like a rigged game -- an economy that won't respond, a democracy that won't listen, and a financial sector that holds all the cards. - Robert Reich

Born & bred Michigander. Camp a couple weeks at the Straits every year. Lived in the UP about 7 years. Spent the day after getting married (1979) in the Soo on the island, when, by the way, they were filming ‘Somewhere in Time’ and saw two little sports cars parked by the Grand Hotel...didn’t know what they were doing at the time, but knew it was wrong. Celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary there Memorial weekend this year. wink

Just thought I’d add my avatar is me standing on the island after walking the bridge on Labor Day - 50th anniversary of Big Mac...done that ten times, including the last 6 years.

I heard on the car radio news today that Pence's entourage went onto some island in Michigan over the weekend and brought vehicles onto the island where there had not been a car in 100 years. Hmm

Rick, I’d repeat Ujest Shurly’s line, “Come to Michigan, go to Mackinac Island for a few days”. You’ll understand.

Welp, Donald J Trump finally...FINALLY did something that Barack Obama didn't do: Trump got himself a formal impeachment inquiry.
