I am actually strangely reassured by the current storm affecting the U.S.
An American colleague of mine was asking about the Canadian perspective on your current travails, about a year and a half ago. I told him that America has faced far worse and survived, usually coming out a better place in the end. The population is, overall, well educated, and by a good margin Americans are well intentioned people who try to do the right thing. I said that he lived in a robust society, so as painful as it all might be, I said I was optimistic.
We might be wincing a bit, watching as we do from our lawn chairs on our side of the Niagara River, but do I think America will be an even better place for all of this.
And it could be far worse: you could live in the UK.

God in Heaven I hope you're right. And I hope that somehow, our revival winds up including some kind of universal health care...maybe not the exact same thing you guys have up there but something similar, better than what we have right now.
It's wonderful to have a Canadian on this board, healthy perspective from outside the scrum.
PS: Brexit? It's a Russian hoax, yes?

I know, I saw that this morning and both Karen and I guffawed hard, and Karen was barely awake when it flashed on the screen, but she woke up very quickly!
"What the Hell? Who is that?" (puts on her glasses)"
"OMG OMG, they're throwing..."
"Yup, Twumpy and Rudy are throwing Uncle Sam off a bridge, mobster style."
"Hee hee, so true! Perfect!"
One of my other favorites is this one from right after the Helsinki Meeting:

If you want to talk about disturbing things, how much ya wanna bet this guy was some kind of MAGA hero who wanted to sabotage The Libtard Paradise? (California)

As far as I know, but not that much of a hoax as such. I'm not sure who else benefits having the governments behind 2 seats on the UN Security Council paralysed by internal politics and weakened by introspective and insular nationalism.
Despite everything, I'm fairly sure the Chinese are more concerned with their own problems and would prefer a little more predictability, and the French seem to be looking on with horror.
I reminded a Brit, beside whom I sat on a flight a while ago, that Britain's prosperity of the 19th and early 20th century, (much celebrated with great nostalgia, it seems) was the result of extreme resource extraction from the colonies... and that we remaining colonials got the wild idea in, oh, 1918, that we'd rather not play along.
(Well, 1837 too, but that fizzled.)
(Oh, and it remains (pun intended) to be seen if the Scots and the Northern Irish are going to tag along for the ride. Wales... no idea.)
I’ve been snorting and haw hawing at Jonathan Pie’s ongoing satire of the unfolding political rewrite happening in the UK. Much better, imo, than the infotainment bureaus:
