My sister died on Sunday, from a very rare, extremely aggressive form of ovarian cancer. One month from first symptom to final breath. She had a difficult childhood, but made the best of it: Math degree, taught elementary school and later Middle School math. Programmer at the Navy Electronics Lab. Married an upstanding Naval Officer, and had two children.

One of her elementary school students was inspired by her so much, he named a character in his Disney show Recess, after her. That character is the only nice, sane teacher at the elementary school.

He named a character...you're saying one of her students went on to be a mover and shaker at Disney. Tell us the name of the character and from now on, when we think of that character, we will think of your dear sister.

Is this her character?

Quote
Miss Grotke (voiced by Allyce Beasley) is the 4th grade teacher of the main cast. She is known for her mild manner, yet eccentric personality, basically being that of a hippie, including her vocabulary. She is well loved by her students, especially for her tendency to stick up for their rights and encourages them to express themselves. Her dialogue establishes her as an advocate for the environment and race/gender rights. She also moonlights as a magician.

I am so sorry to hear of her passing.
One month, that is astoundingly cruel.
Our prayers of support to you and her husband and family.

Yes, that is the character. He wasn't a Disney employee and it wasn't a Disney produced show, but it was carried on the Disney channels. My sister was a little disturbed that he made her Black, but it fit the character's personality better.

At least it was fast. Most cancer deaths take a very long time. Thank you for your thoughts.

The music world is mourning the passing of eighty year-old Ginger Baker, who helped revolutionize the role of percussion in rock decades ago as the heart of the rock supergroup "Cream", featuring Ginger, bassist Jack Bruce and guitarist Eric Clapton.

Your sister is not gone, she will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Yes, she had quite a memorial service. I had no idea so many people knew and appreciated her. I worry about her husband. Both of his daughters live far away and have started their own families. The one in the Bay Area has been coming down here on weekends. Hopefully, he will spend time with each of them on a regular basis.

Last Friday, we went with John to see her get cremated. Seems a little ghoulish to keep the body around for that long. I guess I prefer the Jewish idea of having everything done within three days.

Robert Forster, an Academy nominated actor with over a hundred films to his credit, died at 78.
His latest accomplishment was a role in the Breaking Bad movie El Camino.
His Oscar nom came from a universally acclaimed role as bail bondsman Max Cherry in Quentin Tarantino’s "Jackie Brown".

Elijah Cummings
(January 18, 1951 – October 17, 2019)

[Linked Image from i1199.photobucket.com]

The son of sharecroppers, Cummings rose to become one of the most prominent Democratic members of the House. A former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, he was known for his dedication to Civil Rights and his dogged tenacity in his role on the House Oversight Committee.

Although House Oversight is one of the panels in the current impeachment probe investigating President Donald Trump, and was active in investigating the Trump administration well before impeachment, Cummings would frequently go out of his way to inform reporters of the committee’s other work, including its focus on combatting the opioid crisis.
