Strategically I'm thinking Pelosi wants to get it done with and over well before the election because she knew this was coming.
Democrats are gonna take a ass whoopin' on this.
It'll be ancient history come election day. Trump will be voted out not because he extorted the leader of some tin pot Eastern European nation but because he's a sh*tty president.

A complete acquittal or even any kind of victory in this will fundamentally alter the nature of our entire democracy, starting with but not limited to, the nature of our elections, the method by which we conduct all foreign policy, the value of our word and reputation abroad, and last but definitely not least, the power of Congress as one of the supposedly co-equal branches of government.
It would fundamentally alter our national security forever.
It would also fundamentally alter the Constitution by creating a nobility class that is beyond the reach of the law, above it, in real and graphic terms.
It will fundamentally alter our roles as citizens of this republic, by virtue of making us "subjects", in some ways even more feudal than our counterparts in Britain.
And the fatal flaw in this hangman's pie is the fact that, unlike our royalist counterparts across the pond, our nobility would not come from a royal lineage at all, but rather, from Vladimir Putin. All roads ultimately lead to Putin in this, ALL roads.

“My country tis of thee, sweet land of bribery, of thee I sing. Land where thy fathers lied, land where the children cried, From every mountainside, let chaos reign.”
Are those original lyrics? Did you create that?
Ja, I am now a famous lyricist.
I need to write some music for it...
You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the old model obsolete. R. Buckminster Fuller
Republicans are being remarkably short-sighted: What happens when they gut the role of Congress in favor of a Unitary President, and then a Democrat gets elected? Their worst nightmare, and they created it! If the President can do anything he likes, he can easily pack the Supreme Court and there goes the Conservative majority in the stroke of a pen.
I woke up this morning with the idea that the approach of the "two sides" to Trump's impeachment is parallel to their approach to the climate crisis.
Conservatives have adopted the "belief" basis for evaluating both significant issues and refuse, in both cases, to consider the facts. They dismiss the facts as not credible because the Libs have already made up their minds - libs are prejudiced, and make up false facts to fit. Of course, the cons have already made up their minds, too, but their minds have not been influenced by any factual evidence.
It's yet another version of religion vs science.

This sort of thing has been accelerating since 1979.

Quote
"The facts are not in dispute; witnesses, including those called by both parties, affirm these facts. The President has abused his power by soliciting foreign interference in the 2020 election and leveraging U.S. security assistance dollars paid for by taxpayers and appropriated by both parties in Congress to compel a close ally—at war and dependent on our aid—to malign his political rival. When these actions became known, the President endeavored to hide the truth, and he obstructed Congress’ constitutional duty to investigate by withholding documents, evidence, and fact witnesses."
Speaking on a strictly personal level, the rise of Trump and Trumpism has utterly destroyed my faith in my fellow Americans. Everyday I now find myself looking around and seeing ordinary people, and wondering what they think they will gain from empowering a real, genuine, honest-to-goodness dictator.
Turns out nearly half of this country is actually okay with dictatorship and wouldn't even mind if Trump were to attempt to postpone the 2020 elections.
As far as I can tell the problem resides in our educational system that, pretty much, ignores how things are supposed to work. Every couple of months there is always a news story that documents the incredible ignorance of high school children (and their parents). They simply have no idea.
So, a population of ignoramuses watch tv and believe everything they see. I spend a lot of time telling people that when they are watching tv they are actually watching another reality that has absolutely nothing to do with them. Its ENTERTAINMENT!
As an aside I can remember a time when there was news, on tv, that was NOT a income generator but something the networks did to fulfill their gratitude for the use of the airwaves. That, unfortunately, is now a fact.
These days there are some other facts: America runs on perception and rare fact Greed is the American creed

It's a consumer product...news, that is. Paddy Chayefsky's 1976 film "Network" predicted the future we're in right now.
