What we don’t seem to be able to do is put a finger on why this chasmistic divide exists. I have put some effort into trying to see it from a Trump supporter’s perspective to no avail. Part of it I can see, that many people are not Trump Zombies but would poll as inclined to vote for him because the economy (by the customary measures) is doing well and employment is high, and they don’t pay much attention otherwise. Also, the decades-long rightwing propaganda machine against the left has shifted knee-jerk perceptions of liberals negatively for politically casual citizens.
But the hardcore Trump true believers are still a mystery to me. There seems to be an actual cult mentality of worship for the man. He apparently has a dark and highly attractive charisma for a class of people that is surreal. For many of us he is plainly a blatant con man - I would challenge anyone to present factual evidence to the contrary. In fact, a salient characteristic of the Zombies is that they despise facts and refuse to even acknowledge them. The easiest proof of this is their adamant insistence that Trump never lies.
I post this not just to counter Perotista’s casual expressions of an implied equivalence between opposing “partisans”, it is also a self reality check to assess if I am just as crazy as the hardcore Trumpers as their polar opposite.
I have mentioned before canvassing hardcore Trumpers on a righty blog and I can report this - they absolutely will not allow a discussion of these issues into their bubble. Among them there is zero introspection happening. They are cultists. The question is why? Because fascism offers John Q Public a strongman who will excuse John's poor behavior. In a nutshell, Hitler's appeal wasn't that he would fix everything, it was that the average person could reach out and put a [censored] hurting on people they didn't like, with the sanction of the state. That is why you hear this slack-jaws say things like "He's doing what I hired him to do." They're not lying. Believe them when they say that.

Also, "both sides" reeks of hipsterism.
Yes, the dems are flawed people driven by investment capital. But unlike the GOP, they are not in principle opposed to a republic.

So, no, this isn't going to get better. I dunno, prob'ly a lot of people felt that way during the civil war. Some felt that way when witches turned them into newts. But you know what? It got better. We aren't the first country to get saddled with poor leadership and we won't be the only country that never rose above it. Even Somalia will rise above its current woes, even North Korea will rise above the Kim dynasty. We will rise above Donald Trump and his Christo-fascist minions. Unfortunately, by "we" I don't necessarily mean those of us here will live to see it. A lot of this is being fueled by religious extremism. But...that very extremism is driving people away from religion. Like a snake eating its tail, it's not sustainable. The religious right is going to shrink. The Boomer mindset is going to shrink. Millenials are going to be taking over soon. Boomer politics is driving Millenial voters away. The snake eating its tail again. And then there's the economics of the situation. Late stage capitalism is a thing. We're nearing the end of the game. When some (near)future Jeff Bezos owns all of the wealth in the world. As corporate interests control more and more of government the pressure ratchets up on working Americans. We are driven into debt(as a society, I personally am not in debt) so that corporate interests may further prosper. Again the snake is eating its tail. So yeah, all of this is gonna work itself out eventually but we may not be here to see it. Quickest way from here to there is to elect Bernie Sanders. Warren is the next shortest path. Yall gonna hate this but giving Trump a second term might be next in line. Letting him really dash the ship of state on the rocks to break the cultish grip he has on Republican voters. Eventually the snake gets to its own assh*le and things begin to taste like sh*t.

This is just a homogenized disintegration of the republic. If we threw Trump out this afternoon, the whole thing would still be rotten to the core.

Eventually the snake gets to its own assh*le and things begin to taste like sh*t. We're almost at that point now. When a pack of Bezos or equivalent do own most or all of the wealth in the world, they cut their own throat, and the most amazingly stupid part is, they should be smart enough to look back at ten thousand years of history and understand that nature itself doesn't tolerate an imbalance that terrible for very long. But where does their continuing stream of revenue come from if no one can afford to keep their head above water enough to even buy anything from these people? What do these self-made emperors think the real estate industry is going to do when most people can't afford to buy a home, or EVEN PAY RENT, or buy a car, or buy health insurance, or even buy groceries. Who is going to keep civilization going for them to enjoy when most people have no idea how? They're throwing their own furniture into the fireplace and crowing about how nice and toasty warm they are. How is it they can't understand that condemning half the country to a permanent slot in a stagnant and economically dead underclass is inviting a fatal infection that kills the entire host body?

They are cultists. The question is why? Look no farther than Christianity. Millions of people who honestly believe that there is a separate existence beyond this one which is far more important to them than the very world they live in. Where a cosmic dictator rules with a heavy but fair hand. In their minds they have already become a part of this separate and entirely imagined world. They are devoted to the one their leaders say is the Chosen One who will lead them through the end times. Basically they're f*cking nuts.

The civil war was cut and dried. You had an opponent you could concentrate on. I've had no problem identifying the enemy. The Republican Party.
