I've always said, long before I joined this site. That if the Democrats nominate someone who is attractive to the independent voter, they'll win in a landslide and take back the senate. If the Democrats nominate someone who isn't, who is as disliked as Trump is or more so, another 2016 is certainly possible.
2016 was unique in that neither side tried to attract the independent voter. The end result was Trump winning independents 46-42 over Hillary with 12% voting third party. Against both major party candidates, some 9 million voters in all.
Trump still hasn't paid one lick of attention to independents. Will whoever wins the Democratic nomination do so this time around? Learn from Hillary's mistakes. She spent way too much time trying to placate Sanders voters than paying any attention to the independent voter.
For the Democrats the old political adage goes stay left during the primaries, then move toward the center during the general election. Hillary stayed left mainly because of Sanders supporters who were angry over the rigged primaries by the DNC and Democratic state party leaders in Hillary's favor.
My advise, although I'm no Democrat. Have honest primaries and once you have a nominee, move toward the center ideological wise. Work on those 9 million independents who voted against both Clinton and Trump as we already know they don't like Trump much. They can be had with the right candidate and the right political strategy.

It's high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first instead of their political party. For way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.
