To the OP, if I could address your last point about Evangelicals, I would recommend
MOST of "
Immoral Majority", by Ben Howe. A member of the Covservative Commentariat and from the Evangelical wing, while he engages in nutpicking for some of his supporting evidence, his discussion of how and why he acted the way he (and others like him) did (up until the point where he could no longer self-delude) is... sometimes scathing, and sometimes sorrowful, but insightful. I would also recommend (for everything except his opinions about how some new fella with a French name is now better than Michael Jordan which is factually, scientifically, and morally heretical) David French on this topic, for a discussion of Conservative Evangelicals from a Trump-opposing insider's perspective.
