Totally expected: Yes
Total waste of time, energy and money: No. You are only looking an impeachment poll numbers. But the intent of sending it to the senate was never about getting a conviction. It was so everybody voting for a congressman in November knows in their heart the Republicans are totally corrupt. Without the kangaroo court trial, we wouldn't have Romney's speech about voting to convict. I think Utah just turned Blue.
LOL, Utah, Blue? Okay. As for congress, the house, this time around the Democrats are defending 235 seats to the Republicans 199 whereas in 2018 it was the Republicans defending 241 vs the Democrats 194. One also has to remember that the 40 seats the democrats picked up in 2018, 31 were in districts Trump won in 2016. Voting for the articles of impeachment is bound to be a hot campaign issue there. The question is were the folks in those 31 districts plain tired of Trump or will be revenge night in November for their vote for the articles. Unknown at this time.

As of 1 Feb this time around the Democrats have 30 competitive/at risk seats of switching to the Republicans 17. These numbers are dynamic and change constantly or at least from month to month when new data becomes available. This would translate in the GOP picking up 5-8 seats, far from the 19 needed to regain control.

It's high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first instead of their political party. For way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.
