So my cousin got my grandfather's WWII records declassified from the Canadian government, given that the secrets act has expired.
My grandfather had told us that he trained soldiers from 1942 to 1944, then "helped clean up the mess." It turns out that meant he worked on cracking death camps and rounding up guards and SS men for trial. He was almost unique, it turns out, in that none of his charges had "accidents", and they all lived to meet the hangman. Which fits, my grandfather was a very cold-blooded man.
We also found out I have one more aunt than I thought, since my grandfather did a little [censored] around in England in 44. We just received an email reply from this new aunt, and it turns out that I have a bag of cousins and an even bigger bag of their kids and grandkids we never knew we had. So, you know, my family just got bigger, and that's more than okay.
