They are spending MY taxpayer dollars to keep oil companies, cruise ship lines, and airlines afloat. Nothing in the constitution about any of that...

Promoting and providing for the General Welfare (I think it's even capitalized, isn't it??) IS in The Constitution, however.

"Protect my vulnerable ass if we are under any kind of widespread national threat, emergency, attack."

Godammit, even the most sour hardcore dried up anarcho-libertarian says that's the really only essential function of the whole Federal Government.

Why is this so difficult for these Trumpsters to accept?
Because they can't get their nails done or go hang out at Bass Pro for a little while?
Because they picked leadership that's leaving them high and dry while answering the beck and call of every Fortune 500 company on the planet?
Because Donnie is handing out favors to all his buddies while literally killing thousands by playing Keep Away with essential supplies and drying up paycheck protection in order to force people to go back into an unsafe work environment?

I'm going to have to go check on that Constitutional Capitalization thing, unless someone else here can remember it the same way.

Section 8

1: The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

Okay, the word "general" isn't capitalized but guess which word IS capitalized? Welfare.
The general Welfare means the founders treat the concept of general Welfare as a nominal and optimal condition for society to enjoy.

It's right up there with Defence.
And I don't mean "de fence dat de Trumpers be sittin on", I mean protecting our dumb asses when TSHTF.

Hey, I don't want to be seen as the conservative, ultra-right-wing guy here, because I'm not. I'm a centrist, and in most domestic matters I lean left. But I'm not as against corporations as some people here may be. Sure, I did not like Trump's huge tax cut that benefited the 1% and the corporations. Sure, I'm not for corporate welfare.

But I do have a healthy respect for American capitalism. A lot of people (not necessarily the people posting here; no blame or accusation intended) don't understand that regular Americans, middle-class Americans, and even lower-class Americans depend on Wall Street much more than they imagine (for example, those retirement plans will suffer if Wall Street tanks). Capitalism made of America the wealthiest country in the world and the majority of the population enjoys a quality of life higher than that of the overwhelming majority of the world. So, in principle I don't see with the greatest enthusiasm ideas like "let's just divert 200 billion dollars from corporations to pay for remdesivir."

That's one of the reasons why I never warmed up to Bernie Sanders. When the solution for most problems is to tax the rich, often you run out of rich people to tax, like many European countries realized, when they over-taxed theirs and the rich simply literally took their business elsewhere, moving out of the country and taking away their assets. Remember, France saw its internal revenue DROP when they over-taxed the rich, then they had to cancel those taxes as they were losing more money than they were collecting, with the rich fleeing the country.

Actually, GreatNews, there are only a couple of what I would call socialists here. Most of the regulars are pretty centrist except for one conservative at the moment.

My attitude is: We need capitalism, but it has to be regulated to keep it working. Almost all of our current retirement income is because my wife and I made some careful investments during our working lives. We have rental properties, and are very fortunate our tenants all seem to remain employed and paying their rent. But we wouldn't evict anybody now if they couldn't pay. Our tenants don't have the resources we have.

Agreed, 100%, and I also have tenants; some are not paying... but I won't evict them either.

I have the ONE tenant from the ONE property and that's it but fortunately they seem to still be employed too.
I hope that holds out for them, because between them and the DVD sales and a little bit of editing work (very little these days) that's all I have right now. Karen has her VA pension. That's it for us.

The reported new infection pace and fatality pace have remained essentially unchanged for 5 weeks - about 30,000 newly reported cases and 1900 deaths, daily. While there has been variation up and down, the 7-day average remains stubbornly consistent. I personally believe both reports are too low. But every day represents a new Pearl Harbor, and every two another 9/11.

I also believe the upper limit of fatalities is around 800,000, but I don't believe we'll ever get near that. My prediction a month ago was a lower limit of 80,000 and an upper of 160,000. Sadly, I now believe I was too optimistic. We'll obviously exceed the lower limit before the weekend is out, and we're months, at least, from gaining any semblance of control.

If nothing significant changes in the short term (in terms of preventive measures, or significant medical breakthrough), we'll exceed the upper prediction by summer- June 21. As I contemplate that reality,I get incredibly angry. The inevitability of a pandemic cannot expiate the reality that the gross incompetence of this administration has made every aspect of it worse.

Nice to believe that is what was going through their minds, unfortunately at the time clerks would randomly capitalize words, typically nouns i.e. most likely means nothing of importance.

I would rather think the Founders (notice my use of capitals) understood the role of the government they were trying to implement i.e. not only provide physical security but provide public services.

Here's another interesting article, poll on the Corona Virus.

"Yahoo News/YouGov poll: Most Americans deny Trump virus response is a 'success' — nearly half say Obama would be doing better"

Don't pay much attention to how Democrats and Republicans think or answered the question. Pay attention to independents, the swing voters, the non-affiliated and less to non-partisans.

45% better under Obama, 28% the same under Obama and or Trump, 27% answered better under Trump. Independents give you the truer gauge where America as a whole stands whereas Republicans and democrats are biased up the ying yang. Biased and partisan.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/yahoo-ne...ama-would-be-doing-better-134316999.html

It's high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first instead of their political party. For way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.

I think, my friend, you have made as succinct an analysis of the Framers' Intent as possible.
