Behold, the grave of a wicked man,
And near it, a stern spirit.

There came a drooping maid with violets,
But the spirit grasped her arm.
"No flowers for him," he said.
The maid wept:
"Ah, I loved him."
But the spirit, grim and frowning:
"No flowers for him."

Now, this is it --
If the spirit was just,
Why did the maid weep?
-- Stephen Crane (1871-1900)

Why did the maid weep?

Pretty silly question! Foolish young women ALWAYS are attracted to the bad boys. I suspect it has a pre-human genetic basis, perhaps aggression being one sign of high fitness and indicative of a mate who will have competitive advantage for limited resources.

Of course less aggressive, more cooperative males are also widely present in the human population, because smarter young women have the sense to choose them as mates.

I would say that the maid was weeping because the spirit was not "just", for it was she, an apparent innocent, not the wicked dead man, who was actually being punished. And to what end?
Yours,
Issodhos

Or, much more simply - the maid was his daughter.

Souls attain maturity at death.
All who die unbaptized are wicked.
The babe died before being baptized.
The maid is his mother, laying flowers for her lost babe.

The maid weeps because she loved him, just as explained in the poem. Love does not judge, the loving and the loss make the tears. Love is not justice, nor is justice love. As Kurt Vonnegut said, "I weep for my country when I reflect that God is just". More weeping in despite of justice.
