My family came to the US from Scotland via Ontario, the Southampton area.
My folks live south of Kincardine, which is where I went to high school, so near enough.
There is a really good documentary series "The Bruce" on TV Ontario's web site. I hadn't realized that the population of the area had basically already halved by the early 1900's as farmers' children moved west to establish their own places as the prairies opened up. It seems that "through migration" has been a thing there for a long time.
That said, for a few glorious summer months you can't beat the beaches. The area is seeing a boom with "work from home" and COVID. Cottages are being bought up, though. With the Muskokas becoming just wee bit busy the Toronto Financial District set are buying summer digs in the Bruce. The bugs aren't as bad as Muskoka either...
With global heating the winters no longer leave you housebound for 3 day stretches by waist high drifts on your front door, either...
