I'm wondering how random citizens will have standing to sue abortion providers if they can't show that they are being damaged? The $10K bounty is for successfully suing providers, not for ratting anybody out. Does the law grant standing for uninvolved parties to sue? Can the state grant standing to sue where there are no damages?

That seems like a critical weakness in the Texas law.

The law,as I nderstand it, encourages others to sue. I don’t know how they defined standing; I’ll try to look it up. Apparently the6 think they’ll get a lot of ex-boyfriends.

I’ll do some reading.

I think I read the bounty doesn't apply if the Rat has a connection to the aborter or the provider. That kinda deep sixes malicious lawsuits. But if you have no connection, then standing is more like lying down asleep!

Well, that was easy to find. From the Texas Tribune;:
“Senate bill 8, which allows anyone to sue anyone who performs or aids in an abortion, marks an unprecedented change to who has standing to bring a lawsuit .

Republican lawmakers’ move to ban nearly all abortions in Texas was accomplished through a huge, unprecedented expansion of who can bring a lawsuit against someone else: Under the law, anyone can sue anyone who performs, aids, or intends to aid in an abortion - regardless of whether they have a personal stake in the abortion performed.”

I’ll be back with a a link in a moment.

According to Marketwatch, anyone at all at all can turn “bounty hunter.” They can’t sue the woman herself, but anyone who helps her - at $10,000 per.

I can't see that part of the law going unchallenged. Standing is everything. Hmm

Yeah. I’m sure the Supreme Court will agree.

Words like “slippery slope” and “opens the door to a massive clusterfick of unintended consequences” come to mind.

Could be a lot of fun getting that sorted out procedurally.

Of course, the immediate damage is the fear factor for providers and the subsequent shrinkage of services.

Close, but not quite. The immediate damage is to a lot of pregnant women while things get sorted out.

Of course. That was the bad outcome I was driving at.

This thing of totally upsetting a fundamental principle of law, that of standing, is a giant leap further over the Great Cliff Of Chaos that the lemmings of the Right (Wrong) think that they desire.

We are indeed in the Upside Down.

The hope is that there are still enough semi-rational people around who will rise up in outrage and turn the ship around. But maybe not...

I say, let the Corvids and the Fungi take the helm! Humans are clearly an inferior invasive species with little or nothing of value to offer Mother Earth.
