I could make a joke about Donald Trump's father pulling out back in 1945, but I will restrain myself.

On January 1, 2022, Washington State will have the first-in-the-country, Long Term Care wage tax of 0.58%. It's to support those in long term care. There is a guy who just joined my vanpool says it's all apart of "Uncle Scam." (His euphemism of Uncle Sam collecting too many taxes.) Why did he join the vanpool? He stated so he can reduce the miles on his leased cars - plural - one for his wife, one for him. Why is he leasing cars? Because the LLC he formed allows him to 100% write-off the leases for his business. What's his business? Owning houses and renting them out for twice the bank note. Now, if you work 40-hours a week at a job, and your wife works 100% at her job, how can you write-off 100% of your leased cars for the "business LLC" when you drive those leased cars to your other jobs? Sounds like the only person scamming is this dude. It's ironic that folks accuse others of what they do themselves. Another example of such a person is Donald Trump. Irony!

I could make a joke about Donald Trump's father pulling out back in 1945, but I will restrain myself. It would have been a GREAT idea. The chaos and misery he personally has caused hundreds, if not thousands of people would have been worth it.

Where is Ponderer these days? He seems to have been AWOL for quite some time now.

It's been a few weeks. I'd text him...'what's up?"...but I left my phone at work yesterday.

If your vanpool-mate is reporting 100% of his mileage as LLC-related, than he's committing tax fraud. The tax forms for reporting business expenses require you to list miles driven for business versus total miles driven, and require you to have detailed logs for each trip claimed. If he gets audited, he's probably screwed. If you feel justified, reporting stuff like that to the IRS is anonymous, and gets you a bounty based on how much additional tax they collect.
We have some rental properties, and some years we report zero miles because we don't need to go work on them. When we do have major renovations that we plan to work on, we log every trip on paper.

If he gets audited, he's probably screwed. I got a "skinny" audit about ten years ago, all they wanted was proof of mileage. Fortunately, I have notebooks where I record at least an outline of what I do each day (sometimes more detailed if it's for a job where I need to invoice for time and expenses) and the first note is the truck mileage before I even start the engine. My office is at home, so I don't have any non-qualifying commute-to-work miles. For the audit I spent an hour photocopying that year's notebook, which I mailed to them. Not too long after I got a "Thank you very much" letter, and the audit was over. I suspect that if I hadn't the detailed notes that I would have been in for a full audit.
