... is a piss-poor method of communication. Especially the written word, which suffers from a lack of ability to nuance (tone, inflection, body language), and also doesn't have the advantage of instant feedback to detect and correct misunderstandings.
Even with the leverage of nuance and real-time feedback, spoken communication really sucks for communicating, too. It's weird that we humans seldom realize this.
A sage person once said that if we really understood one another, there would be no argument. (At least I understood him to be a sage person...) Just for fun I am hearkening back to the original post. I note that the substance of it was entirely ignored, indicating to me that, in spite of an earnest effort to open a fascinating and serious topic of discussion about a humongous unnoticed weakness in human interactions, nothing was communicated. I’m experiencing mixed emotions about having a premise so clearly demonstrated to be true without having had any discussion whatsoever!

Language is the best we got, sport. Until you're ready to do the Vulcan mind-meld. Okay, it wasn't entirely without discussion. Let's go with the concept that language is the best we've got. I made the assertion that it's not very good (... piss poor...). So how good/bad is it? Here's a fun game - every time you read a post, ask yourself, "How well do I understand what this person said?"

ask yourself, "How well do I understand what this person said?" Pretty well most of the time. Do you have comprehension issues? Do you have problems with the etymology of words like vigilant? I don't have problems with language, next to mathematics it depicts a fairly accurate image of what we are trying to describe. Although the parable about the blind men and the elephant carries some weight as well. In that instance, some ill-informed people stated their case without properly putting all the facts together.
Good coffee, good weed, and time on my hands...

Seems like there are a half a dozen of forms of engagement for internet forum interactions that I have experienced.
Insult exchange;
Propaganda propagation;
Arguing;
Debate (often touted but actually impossible on a free forum due to debates having a specific format and rules);
Discussion;
Conversation;
Joking around.
Any others?
