Planets are death traps. Sometimes nice places to visit, but dangerous places to build civilizations. The vast majority of space in this solar system is between planets, and away from the orbits of asteroids. If we build colonies there, we would be a lot safer. Just as an example, we could leave lots of pathogenic bacteria and most viruses behind on earth. And thus rendering our immune systems as effective as Silly Putty? We'd wind up as a race of Bubble Boys and Bubble Girls and we'd die out immediately because we'd wind up allergic to each other and we wouldn't even be able to procreate.
