The entire news media was in on the stupid joke. They were predicting a red wave from shower to breakfast to Afternoon Delight to quitting time and then they put in overtime.
It is all we heard about on the news for six months straight.

Your "technical response" about "what the pollsters" showed is meaningless because the word on the street takes priority. And that's because that IS the kind of news environment that's been created for the audience ever since Roger Ailes delivered his infamous memo to Richard Nixon, "A Plan For Putting the GOP on TV News", which set off the creation of MetroMedia, which later became Fox News.
