(Nimrata) Nikki Haley is running for POTUS in 2024. Wait until her racist base finds out her real first name. Some people are saying that this run is actually a try-out for the '24 VP position. I'm sure Sarah Palin will have a lot to say about that! Sarah is also trying-out for '24 VP.

Before her passing, Olivia Newton John recorded Jolene as a duet with Dolly Parton. The resulting track is quite fantastic. Have a listen.

That may be the best rendition I have heard.

A well reasoned argument is like a diamond: impervious to corruption and crystal clear - and infinitely rarer.

Here, as elsewhere, people are outraged at what feels like a rigged game -- an economy that won't respond, a democracy that won't listen, and a financial sector that holds all the cards. - Robert Reich

It went straight from SOTU to STFU.

Mask requirements are going away, but people are still dying from Covid. MOST of us have pretty good immunity now, even people who refused vaccinations. But not all of us. In particular, the elderly have diminished immune systems. The immunosuppressed are at risk. Infants who have never been exposed are at risk. If you are in any of those categories, there are precations you can take.

The elderly or at risk patients can put together a plan to get Paxlovid or Remdesivir quickly if they develop any symptoms and test positive. If your doctor refuses to make such plans for you, get another doctor. Pregnant women should be vaccinated, and get a booster near the beginning of their third trimester. Then breast feed, if you can. Pump and bottle feed if you can't. That colostrum gives the baby some of your antibodies until they can be vaccinated. They also protect the baby if they get exposed, in which case they will make their own antibodies and memory T and B-cells. Get that baby vaccinated as soon as you can, because your antibodies don't last that long. A surprising number of babies are getting hospitalized (and even dying) from Covid.

A recent study claims masks don't work, but their study had major flaws. Dr. Griffin on TWIV (an infectious disease doc) said their study was like lumping oranges, apples, and cow pies together, and then recommending people not eat apples because they contain partially digested alfalfa. Masks DO work, but they should be N-95 and you need to wear them right. Not say you wear them usually, but go indoors where there are crowds with the mask only covering your mouth.

They certainly work for me: I am extremely good about wearing my mask anytime I am indoors around other people. And I have not had a cold or flu ever since the pandemic started! This was certainly not the case before masks.

For years, the rap on President Carter has been that his presidency failed yet his post-presidency was the best in modern history.

Carter’s life after his presidency was exemplary for the same reason he was elected president after the disasters of Richard Nixon and Nixon’s vice president, Gerald Ford (who unconditionally pardoned Nixon for any crimes he may have committed): Carter’s modesty, decency, and humanity.

Not only were these traits the opposite of Nixon’s, but they would shine even brighter 40 years later in contrast to the loathsome Donald Trump.

As we celebrate President's Day today, paying tribute the longest living President is the top of my President's list to honor.

Republican House member Marjorie Tayler Greene calls for the dissolution of the United States on Presidents’ Day - much like the last time white supremacists grew impatient with living in an aspiring democracy. crazy

…it’s no wonder her husband Perry is divorcing her. laugh

Well, ain't she just a modern day lady Abe Lincoln!

I think Democrats might want to move to a lovely congressional district in Georgia. It's rural, just north west of Atlanta, and south of Chattanooga. About 100,000 or so could turn that district blue, and make it a nice place to live.

There are several 4 or 5 star local restaurants, some Applebees, and a short drive to Atlanta's Stone Mountain Park (where I attended a wedding). And best of all, there is a train museum! The median household income is just around $28,000 per year, and that combined with only two months of 1.5 inch snowfalls, it sounds like a great place to retire. Not much for apartments or condos, but several houses are available in the area for less than $200,000.

You can take a pleasant drive over to Representative Marjorie Tatlor Greene's Georgia office in Dalton. But she probably won't be there because her office address is just a PO Box.

Hot, bug infested, sticky and surrounded by illiterates is not how I want to spend my retirement years.
By the way, this is not strictly about being in the South either...I keep seeing spectacular deals on beautiful old homes in Illinois too, where my wife was born and raised, but it's hot, sticky and bug infested up there, too.
The literacy rate might be slightly higher but yeesh, the climate is ghastly.

Sure I could buy a 3500 square foot Victorian that still has all the old mahogany slab woodwork, brass fixtures, crystal and gorgeous flooring for all cash on the barrelhead and still have tons of money left over from the sale of our place here in L.A.

But location, location, location.
And most of these lovely homes are in horrible locations which is why they're so cheap.
A 50 thousand dollar Victorian manse is worthless if you're stuck in some dumb podunk town where people think it's funny to spray paint your door with antisemitic messages and the cops aren't motivated to do anything about it. (because they sympathize with the tagger's views)
