If Biden runs again there is a very good chance that it will kill him. I know something about being aged. Being president seems to whiten the hair and grind down the subject. That being said this will also mean that the Democrats will have the first female president. Since I cannot vote Republcan, and will vote Democratic, I suspect it won't be all that bad of a deal.
Should mention that my problem is voting for a Republican because it means 4 more years of utter lies by utter loones. Several presidents have "died at the desk". It might be that Biden has decided that the best way to finish the ride is to stay in the seat. He is something of a motorhead, but he will never be allowed to just go for a leisurely cruise in his 1967 Corvette anymore...no president is allowed to drive by themselves on public roads after leaving office. He reputedly loves fishing, also likely impossible without an entourage. Then ol' Joe needs a new running mate for 2024.

The VP slot is irrelevant when it comes to elections. No one votes the VP slot, they vote the top of the ticket. Now who’s VP will be important if Biden died in office. Right now, Harris isn’t liked much, in fact, she’s disliked by a lot of Americans. https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/other/kamala_harris_favorableunfavorable-6690.htmlWhich as I say is irrelevant as long as she’s VP. Even so, Harris has only a 73% favorable among Democrats which is extremely low for a person that is VP of her own party. Worse yet is her 26% favorable among independents, 37% favorable from all Americans. Even Trump is viewed more favorable among independents and all Americans than Harris. https://docs.cdn.yougov.com/sa25s832p5/econTabReport.pdfWhy, I don’t know as Harris has stayed hidden for much of her term as VP. But there are some people who just rub others the wrong way, Harris may be one of them. Democrats didn’t like her during their presidential primaries back in 2020 as she was one of the first to go, drop out. I don’t think Biden will drop Harris if he runs again. The reason, if Biden does pick a different VP it would be an admission he screwed up and choose the wrong person to run with him back in 2020. This is basically the same reason G.H.W. Bush kept Quayle on the ticket for 1992.
It's high past time that we start electing Americans to congress and the presidency who put America first instead of their political party. For way too long we have been electing Republicans and Democrats who happen to be Americans instead of Americans who happen to be Republicans and Democrats.

Replacing Harris would not be an admission of "screwing up" as you opine. If Harris were to be replaced, it would come as a result of Harris publicly announcing she'd like to bow-out of the 2024 race.

Could be she has a more parochial status. I am thinking she would be better as a gubernatorial candidate or Congressional candidate. I think she is a better fit at those levels, than presidential. Plus of course the basic "beauty contestant" quality of a lackluster charisma.
Charisma will overshadow a lot of substantive faults of a candidate.
ignorance is the enemy without equality there is no liberty America can survive bad policy, but not destruction of our Democratic institutions

That’s interesting Rick. I highly doubt Harris would do that. That would blow any chance she has of becoming president. I highly doubt she could win election on her own. I don’t think the Democrats would even nominate her if Biden decides he won’t run again in 2024 or if Biden complete two terms for 2028.
I also agree with rporter. These days there isn’t much different party affiliation wise between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. It’s independents that decide elections, the popularity or beauty contest is at hand there where charisma plays a huge part in how’ll they vote. That is generally as there’s been election where charisma was in very short supply. These last two Clinton/Trump and Biden/Trump are prime examples. Biden had the upper hand in 2020 because he was much more likeable than Trump and Biden behaved like a grownup/adult whereas Trump was the 4-year-old spoiled brat with his name calling and throwing of temper tantrums. Obama had charisma up the ying yang, he won twice. G.W. Bush didn’t have that much charisma, but he had a down home boy’s charm. It helped G.W. that he went up against two statues in Gore and Kerry totally devoid of charisma. Bill Clinton on the other hand had loads of charisma as did Reagan. They won two terms. G.H.W. Bush lacked charisma, but he lucked out going against Dukakis in 1988 who looked like an idiot riding in that tank. The elder Bush lost big to Bill Clinton.
You can go back to FDR, the candidate with the most charisma has won the independent vote. Sometimes by large margins, other times by a very slim 1 or 2 points. According to Gallup as of 23 Feb 2023, Democrats 29%, Republicans 27%, Independents 44%. Compare that party affiliation to 2006 when Democrats had a 37-31 advantage over Republicans with but 30% identifying as independents.

...I highly doubt Harris would do that. That would blow any chance she has of becoming president... Pretty certain that no one wants to see Kamala as POTUS. "If" it happens...it would be because of a George Moscone moment.

...These days there isn’t much different party affiliation wise between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party... I'm certain that Democrats are not fomenting insurrections, MSNBC and its hosts are not lying about the 2020 election, and I'm certain that Democrats are not harming democracy. Nor are Democrats holding asinine hearings trying to placate its base. Your mileage may vary...

What does that have to do with party affiliation? The numbers are what they are. Both major parties have been shrinking since 2006, independents have risen since 2006. Cold hard numbers they are. No reasons given for the shrinkage of the major parties or the rise in independents. That can be left to your imagination. Just the fact it has happened and apparently will continue to happen.
It seems as time goes by more and more folks aren’t happy with either major party. I would assume the reasons are many and vary from year to year or election to election as party affiliation rises and falls. But over the long term, both parties are shrinking, that is the trend. But does it matter? Probably not since there are only 2 realistic choices.

Civilian life may not exist for many of us depending on one’s definition of civilian life. 21 years active duty, another 26 working for the army as a department of the army civilian. Then in retirement my friends and neighbors where I live are all either retired military, dependents of the military or those who worked as a contractor for the military. To me a civilian is someone who’s not in the military, not on active duty. I became a civilian when I retired from active duty back in Sep 1986. I imagine a policeman would look at a civilian as being someone not in the police and so on. To me politicians are civilians. They don’t don a uniform.
For jgw, it’s Biden’s choice. I’d prefer he announce his retirement sometime later this year and turn the reins over to a younger generation. I’m not talking old foggies like Warren and Sanders or those who ran before. A fresh, young face. The talent is there between governors and younger senators. But my druthers mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. No no, you misunderstood what I was getting at. You're not going to live the rest of your life surrounded by Secret Service agents who are just about stationed outside your bedroom because you're not an ex-President. Becoming the President is a permanent life altering situation. An ex-President is unable to just walk out their door and go down the street to some donut shop, or take off on a camping trip and go fishing, or just light out for a stop at a local night spot. Their every move is scrutinized for security risks and their every outing involves an entourage. Is that your life now after the service? Of course it isn't. That's what I was getting at. Joe is a gregarious and outgoing personality who thrives on spontaneity and that aspect of his personality, the very thing that made him well liked by his constituents, is forever muted. And so it might be understandable that Joe intends to "die with his boots on" so to speak. He may despise the alternative option of life in a gilded cage.

Jimmy Carter moved all around without secret service protection. Especially with his work for the Habitat of Humanity. If the secret service was around, they stayed hidden or helped out with a hammer and nails so to speak. Jimmy is the only one I have to go on.
